Jobim y Newton Mendonça escribieron 'Desafinado' en 1958 como manifiesto humorístico de la bossa-nova. La letra dice 'si você disser que eu desafino amor' —si me dices que desafino, amor— respondiendo a los críticos que no entendían las disonancias del nuevo estilo.
